Marsupialization is a surgical procedure done in large abscess or cysts that consists of cutting a slit and suturing the sides to the outer surface. This forms a continuous surface from the inside to the outside. This enables the content of the lesion to continuously drain outside until it decreases in size. The healing is the formation of granulation tissue from the base of the lesion.
If removing a large cystic cavity is impractical or invasive, the cyst is left to gradually shrink until there is no observed change in size anymore. At this time, only the cystic cavity remains and removing it as a whole will not so much affect the adjacent structures. At Luxe Smiles Dental Center, continuous care is given to cases with long term care. We make sure that surgical procedures will conserve structure as much as possible.
